One of the symptoms in menopause is Osteoporosis. The hormonal changes decreases your calcium absorbation and your bones can go more fragile. The experts reckons that 1 in 5 women in the US suffers from Osteoporosis, and that makes it and important problem. It can produce bone fractures with very little or no pressure which can reduce our life quality and make even the most simple daily activities difficult..
So what can we do about it? Is there anyway we can prevent it? Well , if you are in the risk zone ( > 50Y/o, caucasian, history of smoking or alcohol abuse, family history of osteoporosis, underweight) here are some suggestions ( always check with your doc first):
- assure your calcium and phosphorus intake: eggs, milk, cheese, salmon, green leafy veggies, tofu…Supplements can be wise in some cases.
- Stop smoking at once!!
- Do some exercise. This makes your bones stronger but be careful, no falling over!!
